Mrs. Cudlip is the author Annie Thomas, whose novel <em>On Guard</em> was published in 1865. Gilbert proposed marriage to Miss Thomas in 1866, but her mother objected to the union and Annie instead married Reverend Pender Cudlip in 1867.]]></dcterms:description>
