{"exhibit":{"title":"Richard D\u2019Oyly Carte and the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company","description":"<p>Richard D\u2019Oyly Carte was born May 3, 1844, in London, the son of Richard Carte and Eliza Jones.\u00a0 After completing his education at University College he joined his father\u2019s musical instrument and music publishing firm, Rudall, Carte &amp; Co. Carte\u2019s career before Gilbert &amp; Sullivan also included working as a composer.\u00a0 Three of his light operas\u2014<i>Dr. Ambrosius: His Secret<\/i> (1868), <i>Marie<\/i> (1871), and <i>Happy Hampstead<\/i> (1877)\u2014were published in London before Carte turned his attention to his true calling as a theatrical agent and theatre impresario.\u00a0 In 1875, Carte united Gilbert &amp; Sullivan to produce <i>Trial by Jury<\/i> to follow an Offenbach opera at the Royalty Theatre.\u00a0 Together with his second wife, Helen Lenoir, Carte nurtured the collaborators through the creation of twelve full-length operas between 1877 and 1896, and built the Savoy Theatre in London\u2019s Strand for their productions.<\/p>\n<p>Featured here are exhibit items pertaining to Richard D\u2019Oyly Carte and the early years of the D\u2019Oyly Carte Opera Company.<\/p>","credits":"","featured":0,"public":1,"theme":"","theme_options":null,"slug":"carte","added":"2017-03-29 13:14:27","modified":"2023-03-28 14:31:52","owner_id":6,"use_summary_page":1,"cover_image_file_id":165,"id":4},"item":{"item_type_id":6,"collection_id":1,"featured":1,"public":1,"added":"2017-03-13 09:39:24","modified":"2017-06-07 13:59:08","owner_id":3,"id":713}}
